The Bible Detectives and the Power of a Song

There are some things we learn as children that stay with us for our entire lives. Sometimes it is a Bible verse. Sometimes it is a story our parents told us. Sometimes it is a song.

For our family, songs became a very practical way of helping our children remember things they needed to know.

Being in the military and moving through our children’s formative years, we learned that, at least in our experience, our children learned things like a new address and phone number if we created a little jingle to help them remember. Military families know that moving is part of the lifestyle. One house becomes another, one town becomes another, and before long you are unpacking boxes and learning a new neighborhood.

I bet if you asked any of our children where they lived in Watertown, NY; Columbia, SC; or Fort Monmouth, NJ, they could still sing you the address.

Why?

Because we put it to a tune.

There was something about turning information into a melody that made it stick. What might have been difficult to memorize when simply spoken became almost effortless when sung.

That experience stayed with us.

So, when we began writing The Bible Detectives, we started thinking about how children learn and, more importantly, how they remember. The goal was never simply to write ten children’s books. The goal was to help children discover God’s Word, ask questions, learn about Jesus, and carry those lessons with them long after they finished reading the final page.

The Bible Detectives series follows Gabi, Pop Pop, and Nonna as they explore some of the most important truths of the Christian faith. Throughout the books, little rhymes and poems were intentionally included to help children remember the lessons from each chapter.

But then we had another idea.

Why not turn the lessons of all ten books into a song?

From Ten Books to One Song

Each of the ten Bible Detectives books has its own message.

Book One begins with a question: Why do we pray? Gabi discovers that prayer is not simply saying words. It is a way of talking with God. One of the little rhymes says it beautifully:

“God is near. God can hear.
Far or near, He is always here.”

Book Two takes the detectives into the story of Jesus as a young boy and the promises that pointed toward Him. The message becomes bigger: Jesus came for everyone.

“Near or far, wherever you are,
Jesus is Heaven’s brightest star.”

Book Three teaches children about seeking wisdom, learning God’s Word, and following Jesus each day. One of its memorable verses says:

“Learn God’s Word, hide it deep;
Plant the seeds, the harvest reap.
Know what’s true, live that way;
Walk with Jesus every day.”

Then comes Book Four, The Wedding Miracle, where the children discover Jesus’ first miracle at Cana. But the lesson goes beyond water becoming wine. It teaches trust, patience, obedience, and recognizing that God’s treasures are more valuable than earthly things.

Book Five, Jesus Brings Hope, reminds us that Jesus sees hurting people. It teaches kindness, compassion, forgiveness, and the importance of helping others. One rhyme says:

“Kind words spoken, hearts can mend.
Smiles can help a hurting friend.
Helping hands and loving hearts,
That’s where Jesus’ kindness starts.”

Book Six, The Secret to a Blessed Life, explores the Beatitudes and what it means to live a life that honors God. Children learn about humility, mercy, peacemaking, forgiveness, prayer, and growing in faith.

Book Seven, The Greatest Gift of Love, brings the story to the cross. This is perhaps the most difficult lesson in the series, but also one of the most important. The message is that Jesus’ love was stronger than hate and stronger than death:

“Love so deep and love so wide,
Jesus chose the cross to ride.
…
Showing love much stronger than death.”

Book Eight, Jesus Is Alive!, brings the hope of the resurrection. The darkness of Good Friday is not the end of the story. The tomb is empty. Jesus lives. The rhyme captures that joy:

“Run with joy and tell the news,
Share the hope that all can choose.
Jesus lives! The tomb’s no more!
Hope has opened heaven’s door.”

Book Nine introduces children to the work of the Holy Spirit—the Helper who comforts, teaches, guides, and points us toward Jesus.

And Book Ten, Ordinary People, Extraordinary God, reminds us that God can work through ordinary people. The book explores the gifts and fruits of the Spirit and encourages children to allow God to grow love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control in their lives.

A Song That Carries the Message

When we looked at all ten books together, we realized that we weren’t simply looking at ten separate stories.

We were looking at a journey.

It begins with a question.

Then comes searching.

Searching leads to wisdom.

Wisdom leads us to Jesus.

Jesus teaches us about love.

His love takes Him to the cross.

The cross leads to the empty tomb.

The risen Jesus promises the Holy Spirit.

And the Holy Spirit helps ordinary people live extraordinary lives for God.

That is the story we wanted the song to tell.

And perhaps that is why the idea of music fits The Bible Detectives so well.

Children may not remember every page they read. They may not remember every conversation Gabi had with Pop Pop. Years from now, they may not remember which chapter contained a particular lesson.

But they might remember the song.

They might be riding in the car one day and suddenly hear the melody in their head.

They might sing:

“Keep searching, keep seeking,
Keep learning each day.
Walk with Jesus beside you,
He will show you the way.”

And suddenly, the lessons come back.

That is what happened in our own family with those little address jingles.

We weren’t trying to create great music. We were simply trying to help our children remember something important.

Now, with The Bible Detectives, we are doing something very similar—but this time the information we want children to remember is far more important than an address.

We want them to remember that God is near.

We want them to remember that God hears them.

We want them to remember that Jesus loves them.

We want them to remember that Jesus died for them and rose again.

We want them to remember that they are never alone.

And most of all, we want them to remember to keep searching God’s Word for the greatest treasure of all.

Jesus.

Ten books.

Ten journeys.

Countless treasures.

And now, one song to help keep those treasures alive in the hearts of our children.

Because sometimes the best way to remember a treasure…

is to sing about it.
